Public Invited to Attend Virginia Caregiver Coalition Meeting

The Virginia Caregiver Coalition will meet at 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on January 20, 2011.

The meeting will be available for viewing via video conference at Appalachian Agency for Senior Citizens (AASC). Please contact Carol Raines, 276-964-1708, to register.

The featured speaker will be Mr. Robert B. Schaefer. Mr. Schaefer is the author of Alzheimer’s: The Identity Thief of the 21st Century and serves on the Board of the Alzheimer’s Association of Southeastern Virginia. He facilitates five Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support Groups in the Richmond Area and is a member of the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Commission. Mr. Schaefer has been a volunteer providing Alzheimer’s/dementia training for First Responders under the auspices of the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) for more than ten years.

Mr. Schaefer was the full-time caregiver of his wife, Sarah, for fifteen years after her diagnosis of probable early Alzheimer’s Disease. Sarah Schaefer received this devastating diagnosis while she was in her forties. Mr. Schaefer continued to be a full-time caregiver for his wife after she entered a long-term care facility in 2002 until her death in 2008.

Following Mr. Schaefer’s presentation, Ms. Christine Jensen, Director, Community and Health Services Research, The Center for Excellence in Aging and Geriatric Health, and current Chair of the Virginia Caregiver Coalition, will discuss “Creating Successful Caregiver Support Programs.” Ms. Jensen is an expert in caregiver support and trained by the Rosalyn Carter Institute. Her program will be of interest to both professional and family caregivers.

AASC is one of Virginia’s 25 Area Agencies on Aging designated by the Virginia Department for the Aging to carry out the department’s mission to foster the dignity, independence and security of older Virginians by promoting partnerships with communities at the local level.
